For some of us 2017, ended with a huge, overwhelming to do list. You may have found yourself burned out, stressed out and strongly considering moving to a foreign country! Perhaps your business goals didn’t meet your expectations and you’re questioning your ability to do more with less.

Or on the flip side, perhaps you know that when we make a conscious decision about where we spend our time, we make an investment in our future. Our to-do list just like time is NOT something that happens TO us. We can expand time and money by being committed to our actions.

Wherever you find yourself on the time spectrum today, based on my knowledge as Global Transformational Strategist, saving companies millions of dollars year after year, below you’ll find three ways to stop wasting time so that you can remain vibrant, creative AND profitable during the new year!

Taken from Six Sigma’s “Common Deadly Wastes”

1. Over Production
You’ve heard the old saying, Work Smarter Not Harder” right? This is simply doing or using too much. If you feel like you’re not enough or you don’t have enough, you can become addicted to perfectionism. Being a perfectionist is the same EXACT thing as having excess inventory; they both equal a loss in our energy and profitability. Realize you are enough and make just enough of what you need for a quality day and a quality work-product and no more. Also make sure you’re not processing things too early (because of your anxiety to achieve more) which can cause re-work and burn out.

2. Waiting
Have you heard the saying “Don’t be a bottleneck!”? A bottleneck signals that there is wasted time on behalf of you and your employees. Sometimes being the only person with subject matter expertise or decision-making authority equals other people are stuck waiting needlessly. I work with some leaders who think if they ask for help, they are giving up control. Guess what, if you don’t ask a Crew member (see my book Every Day is Friday for more information) to help you, you’re out of control already. Now I realize that you are might be the ultimate decision maker in your company, but is it sustainable for you to be involved in things you know others could be doing? Take a risk and make the time to mutually plan with someone who you can eventually delegate to by using Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Model and establish good check points with them along the way.

3. Ineffective Processes
An effective process is a group of activities that adds value. Every person has a work-flow, regardless of how much value they add to you or your bottom-line during the day. It doesn’t matter if you’re answering the phone or manufacturing something complex. The bottom-line is that leaders create effective processes. If your company doesn’t MEASURE leadership goals, guess what? You will remain ineffective chasing fires all day long. Leadership goals help cultivate leaders who create effective processes.

If you recognize any of these issues in your company, then you and your company’s bottom line is being negatively impacted. When we are purposeful with our time, we realize a stronger bottom line. Hey that rhymes!
